Sony trims its profit forecast by one-quarter

Sony trims its profit forecast by one-quarter

Sony Corp, Japan's largest exporter of consumer electronics, cut its annual profit forecast after a slump in demand led the company to lower its estimate for television sales.
Net income may total 60 billion yen ($772 million) for the year started April 1, the Tokyo-based company said in a statement on Thursday, revising its earlier projection of 80 billion yen. The company also cut its estimate for sales to 7.2 trillion yen for the year, from 7.5 trillion yen predicted two months ago.

Japan's largest exporter of consumer electronics slowed down production of TVs, cameras and Blu-ray discs after the March earthquake crippled its factories and disrupted supplies. Chief Executive Officer Howard Stringer, who has budgeted 14 billion yen this year to pay for the costs of the worst hack attacks on Sony ever, also confronts slowing demand in Europe and the United States.

"The economic slowdown, especially in the US and Europe, is leading to a significant drop in TV prices, worsening the industry's oversupply situation," Kota Ezawa, a Tokyo-based analyst at Citigroup Inc, said before the earnings. "Sony will need to promote more restructuring."New Mexico Judge Charged With Raping Prostitute.

The first-quarter net loss totaled 15.5 billion yen in the three months ended June 30, compared with profit of 25.7 billion yen a year earlier, the Tokyo-based company said. That missed the 2.5 billion yen loss average of three analysts' estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Sony fell 1.1 percent to close at 2,013 yen in Tokyo trading before the announcement, widening its loss this year to 31 percent.Japan's benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average has slid 3.2 percent.Samsung Electronics Co, the world's largest maker of televisions, earlier this month reported a 26 percent drop in second-quarter operating profit after a slump in sales of flat screens masked a surge in demand for smartphones and tablet computers.

New Mexico Judge Charged With Raping Prostitute

A long-serving New Mexico criminal court judge has been arrested on charges that he raped a prostitute who videotaped the encounter and sold it to undercover Albuquerque detectives.Judge Albert "Pat" Murdoch was arrested on Tuesday for charges of criminal sexual penetration and intimidation of a witness.Honest Tea company tests Chicagoans' honesty. Murdoch presides over the criminal division for the 2nd Judicial Circuit Court and is a well known and respected judge who has been serving for 26 years.

If convicted, Murdoch could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. He was scheduled to be arraigned today. One of his most high-profile cases was the 2010 Desert Divas case, regarding a prostitution ring. He ultimately suppressed the prostitution ring's client list.Murdoch has also made rulings in numerous prostitution and rape cases and Albuquerque Police Department Commander Doug West said there is a "good possibility" that the judge's arrest "has the potential to put all the cases in jeopardy."

The alleged victim in the charges against Murdoch is an Albuquerque woman who said Murdoch contacted her after seeing her advertisement for sexual services online. She said she met with him and he took her to his home where she was paid $200 for sexual favors, according to court documents. The woman told detectives that she went to Murdoch's home eight times, and that he forcibly performed oral sex on her, despite her objections to oral sex. After he did this a first time, she said she hid a video camera in his room and recorded him forcibly doing this to her again amid her protests.

After the woman videotaped the incident, she began to worry about her safety and posed hypothetical situations to Murdoch about what he would do if a woman were to make allegations about him. She said he told her that "he would use the police and his connections to take care of the situation," according to the police affidavit released by the court.

Honest Tea company tests Chicagoans' honesty

Honest Tea company tests Chicagoans' honesty

The hidden cameras were perched in Grant Park near Buckingham Fountain. What they captured, at least from what we could tell during a few minutes of watching, were tentative creatures circling an odd structure constructed for a few hours. It was not as rib-tickling as watching the Shiba Inu Puppy Cam. Nor as raucous (read: salty) as the Honey Badger bit on YouTube. These spy cameras are Stylish and Powerful! Nope. The creatures in this case were human and the hidden camera was set up by Honest Tea  from  8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Calling it a "social experiment," the tea people placed unmanned pop-up stores featuring the company's bottled brews around the country on Tuesday, July 19. Bottles were available for purchase on the honor system, with a suggested $1 price. How many people took bottles from the Buckingham Fountain site and paid? And how many grabbed a bottle without paying? While we were watching, everyone coughed up cash or coins -- maybe they were Chicagoans, maybe they were tourists.

We'll have to wait until the results come in from around the country (OK, from Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Seattle, Miami, San Francisco, and Washington D.C.) to find out how honest Chicagoans are compared to the 11 other cities.Japan gave its women's soccer team the rock star treatment on Tuesday on their return from an astonishing World Cup triumph in Germany. Unused to the fanfare, the players filed quietly through the airport arrivals lobby in Tokyo, squinting as hundreds of excited fans snapped away with cameras.

Street by Street, Egypt Activists Face Old Guard

Street by Street, Egypt Activists Face Old Guard

After the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, a group of young activists quickly moved to bring the can-do spirit of Egypt's revolution down to the level of their neighborhood. They began installing electricity poles in Mit Oqba's dim streets. They got gas pipes extended to the area. They did what local officials had long promised but never done,Spy Camera Specialists Features the World’s Most Covert WiFi Spy Cameras on the Market, with the aim of showing 300,000 low-income residents the benefits of an uprising meant to end the corruption and stagnation under Mubarak.

Then the activists' parents started getting intimidating warnings: Your children are going to get beaten up by thugs. An official who helped them get papers signed for extending the gas pipes was suddenly transfered to another post.

The activists had run into a collision course with powerful local members of the former ruling party. It was a lesson about the new Egypt: The old regime is still in place and fighting change."The regime is not just Mubarak and his ministers. There are thousands still benefitting," said Mohammed Magdy, one of the activists in Mit Oqba.

Mubarak was ousted five months ago, along with top figures from his nearly 30-year regime. But the military generals who now rule have been slow in — or have outright resisted — dismantling the grip that members of his former ruling party hold on every level of the state, from senior government positions down to local administrations. In the meantime, public anger that real change has not come is growing explosive.

Prince William and Kate Middleton Visit Hockey Country

Prince William and Kate Middleton Visit Hockey Country

The royal couple continued to charm the local residents of Yellowknife Tuesday as they took part in Canada's favorite sport -- hockey. Prince William, who is famously athletic, seemed to be out of his element. He took three shots on an unobstructed goal during a street game with local players but couldn't land the puck in the net. New state commission to begin studying speed-camera use.

"He looked like he knew what he was doing," Calvin Lomen, 20, told the Associated Press. "I heard him say he doesn't know how to play, but it seemed like he had a natural talent if he practiced more." The prince even asked the young goalie to let him get a free shot in. Lomen said he really tried not to block the shot, but somehow Lomen saved what was supposed to be an easy in.

"He said, 'Please let the ball go into the net,'" Lomen said. "But it hit my stick instead, and I wound up saving it." One of the shots was aimed straight at the cameras and reporters stationed right behind the goal. The prince cheerfully laughed off his bad attempts. Kate, dressed in a cream-colored linen three-quarter sleeve dress by designer Malene Birger and high nude heels, decided not to take any shots on goal. She laughed off some of the calls from the crowd to play, and instead dropped the ceremonial puck to start off the game.

Afterward, the couple was presented with two Olympic team Canada hockey jerseys, printed with the last name "Cambridge" on the back. Kate, who has been popular among the crowds of young women and children, was presented with No. 1, while the future king was given No. 2. It seemed the majority of the 19,000 residents of Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's sparsly populated Northwest Territories, were all out to catch a glimpse of the charming couple. As the tour continued, the two seemed to be getting even more comfortable with the crowds and cameras.

New state commission to begin studying speed-camera use

New state commission to begin studying speed-camera use

A new state law forced Ridgeland to pull the plug on its controversial speed camera system last month, but the debate over the future of automated traffic enforcement in South Carolina won't end there.Remote Control Chopper Monitors Crops From Above As part of a law banning speed cameras and speeding tickets based on photographic evidence, a 13-member S.C. Traffic Enforcement Commission soon will be appointed to examine the ethical, legal and policy issues traffic cameras create.

According to state law, the commission will comprise representatives from state government, law enforcement and the S.C. Bar and Criminal Defense Lawyers associations. It must begin meeting "as soon as practicable." Commission members will not be paid, state law stipulates.

State Sen. Tom Davis, R-Beaufort, introduced an amendment to form the study group in February and said he will meet with Senate President Pro Tem Glen McConnell, R-Charleston, after the July 4 holiday to begin making appointments."I don't know if I'm going to be a member, but I'm certainly willing to serve on the commission if asked," Davis said.

The panel also is expected to include the president of the S.C. Sheriff's Association, an organization currently led by Beaufort County Sheriff P.J. Tanner. It is unclear whether Tanner will serve on the commission, as his term as association president ends July 12, said Sgt. Robin McIntosh, Sheriff's Office spokeswoman. Fairfield County Sheriff Herman Young will take over as the group's president, McIntosh said.

State law assigns the commission to examine more than 20 questions related to the use of traffic cameras. Those questions include the constitutionality of mailing speeding tickets to alleged violators, whether the state has enough judges and magistrates to handle the increase in citations and whether the S.C. Department of Public Safety should be the only agency authorized to use the cameras.
