In the past a wired network camera system was a more reliable option than going wireless. Many companies still prefer the added security of a wired system. With a wired system a potential hacker would require a physical connection to the network. Unlike a wired network camera the wireless option eliminates the need to purchase and install long lengths of cable or new power sources. Wireless network cameras can be very small in size as well as being disguised as common household or office items. Larger cameras are generally used outside. A few disadvantages towireless network cameras are security and quality. Many wireless network cameras are susceptible to interference from outside sources. Wireless signals can also be intercepted by unauthorized personnel.

Many of today's network camera systems can be remotely monitored. This monitoring requires the system to be connected to a broadband internet connection and have software running to allow outside access to the video feed. These feeds can be monitored using another computer, PDA or smart phone. There are apps available for smart phones running both Android and iPhone operating systems. Software running on your system can notify you of activity in the areas being watched by your network cameras. Most new model cameras come with motion sensing capabilities that when triggered will email the owner a still shot of the area in question.
